  • THE EFFECTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND TRAUMA ON THE FEMALE PSYCHE

    Summary :

It is seen that structured interviews and self-report measures are used in the studies conducted both in Turkey and abroad to assess trauma more than projective methods which are less direct and intrusive than the others. When the Rorschach is used, the guardedness and avoidance of the traumatized patients have lesser effects on the assessment procedure; post-traumatic symptoms and/or personality alterations can `come to life`; and trauma coping and defense mechanisms which show individual differences can be assessed better in terms of treatment planning. The main objective of this study is to understand the effects of domestic violence on the psychic world of traumatized and sheltered women in Turkey, by using the Rorschach experience. The results are interpreted through psychoanalytical approach and also in terms of Bohm?s special phenomena such as dark shock, void shock, object and subject criticism, evaluation remarks, denial, anatomic stereotypy and self-reference. Depressive theme is found to be dominant in the protocols of the traumatized women. Although they are away from the threatening environment, a depressive state which refers to the loss of the inner object continues. The quality and content of the responses given to the cards IV and VI point out that the subjects feel intense anxiety when confronted with the maternal and/or paternal superego. Both the responses and denial of the cards VII and IX indicate that these women have great difficulty in symbolizing femininity and motherhood.
