Theories argue that depression is not manifested in the same way for girls and boys in normal psychic functioning at adolescence, as the oedipal phase is different in their aims and treatment. Based on this acknowledgement, this research aims at testing this theory for borderline adolescents. We analysed 30 protocols (15 male/15 female) of Rorschach and TAT borderline adolescents between 17 and 20 years old, taken from a previous research, with the Ecole de Paris' psychoanalytic criteria. The first results show that depression, which is more or less expressed but always present, is not manifested in the same manner in girls or boys protocols: girls are more melancholic and depressed, meaning that depression and feelings of loss are recognized by the subject; boys seem to protect themselves behind phallic/narcissistic defence mechanisms and hetero-aggressive acts to avoid the acknowledgement of depression and internal feelings of loss.
