This paper present the literature regarding the phenomenology, risk factors, and outcomes of borderline pathology in children. Surely ?borderline personality disorder? is not diagnosed in patients younger than 18 years because of the ongoing developmental changes. However Roger Miles conceptualized ?borderline pathologies of childhood? to describe a group of patients with particular primitive defense mechanisms and pathologic internalized object relations(eg, splitting, projective identification). These children are characterized by marked instability in functioning, affect mood interpersonal relationships and usually by a combination of disruptive behavioral problems, depressive anxiety and cognitive symptoms. Follow-up studies of these children show that they have a tendency to develop a wide range of personality disorders, not specifically borderline personality disorder. We conclude that borderline pathology in children may define a group of high risk children and my eventually guide our approach to early intervention.
