    Summary :

The Rorschach Developmental Index (DI) (Stanfill, Viglione & Resende, 2013) measures developmental progress and growth. Stanfill et al. hypothesized that lower DI scores would be associated with less effective coping and adaptation and possibly with some types of psychopathology. The aim of this study was to describe the distribution of the DI in a hospitalized adolescent psychiatric sample. The subjects were 105 Finnish adolescents assessed for diagnosis and/or treatment planning in the adolescent psychiatric word of the Tampere University Hospital during the years 1998 ? 2002. Gender distribution: 63 females/42 males, age M (SD) 15.4 (1.3), age range 13 ? 18 years. The primary discharge diagnoses (ICD-10) were: psychotic disorder = 24, mood disorder = 42 and other disorders = 39, The diagnoses in the "other disorders" group were mostly anxiety, conduct, eating and identity disorders. The Rorschach was administered and coded according the Comprehensive System. Interrater reliability (ICC) of the relevant Rorschach CS codes varied from good to excellent. DI was not correlated with age, probably because of the restricted age range of the subjects. Furthermore, DI was not correlated with Ego Impairment Index (EII-2), a measure of psychiatric severity. The DI of the psychotic group was significantly lower than the other groups, which supports the hypothesis about the association between lower ID and psychopathology.
